Scorched wood

12 March 2025

An idea began to take shape while driving up to Preston on M6 Toll road today…

It began by thinking about a plinth idea if these tree form sculptures developed in the way I am hoping they will - a wooden plinth would be great to tie in with the tree theme - actually if I scorched the wooden plinth, that would emphasis the wildfire theme even more - but what if I incorporated the scorched wooden plinth into the overall ceramic sculpture… now there’s an idea!

One of the appeals to this idea is scale - if the largest size I can make the top ceramic part in one piece is approximately 80cm, that means with 80cm for the base - the overall height would be 160cm - 5’ 3” WOW!

More thoughts - could the whole tree form be created out of clay? Perhaps in sections? This would certainly make it easier to colour one section without contaminating another, also it might help with any stress cracks that could be caused through construction. Always looking for new forms, ways to portray the essence of a tree in a semi abstract way (sketchbook 1.4.25).
