Local, National, International

Wednesday 5 February 2025

Finally managed to call into The Lowry in Salford Quays, Manchester to see the exhibition ‘Local, National, International’.

An exhibition featuring 3 very different ceramic artists - Aliyah Hussain, Paloma Proudfoot and Renee So.

Paloma Proudfoot’s work had an immediate impact on me, with it’s graphic, flat style as well as the overall large scale of the work, making it very powerful.

Aliyah Hussain’s beautifully narrative work, very intricate and tactile in appearance - crying out to be stroked and caressed. I couldn’t believe the huge size of the room where she had curated her exhibition, it could so easily have overshadowed her delicate work, but it actually had the opposite effect of allowing the flow of the work to really embrace the whole space.

Whereas Renee So’s work I found to be on the clunky side, while impressive in scale, I felt there could have been so much more depth to the work as the subject area has such a rich source of inspiration spanning centuries.
