Tiles of Texture

8 October 2024

They say it all begins with an idea, so here goes…

Thursday 3rd October 2024 and I start my MA Ceramics course at UCLan in Preston UK (it’s also my 62nd birthday!) The first practical studio based project is to very quickly create 15 x tiles of texture - that sounds easy! Think again.

Seemingly a very ‘simple’ project, however as I start I very quickly realise that I can’t approach this task in my usual working style, I will need to be more spontaneous and much more expressive.

This definately took me out of my comfort zone. It worked to a limited extent, if I need to do this project again I would have a better idea how to approach it.

Found the tile created by pressing leatherhard clay into the bark of a tree located outside at the back of the studios, the most pleasing - is this because it is connected to the work I have been developing over the summer in my sketchbook, which have evolved into a number of ideas based around trees?
